Our History

Continuous business since 1949

Ever since Westmark Construction founder Glenn Johnson drove his first nail as a cabinetmaker for the railroad after WWII until the time of his retirement, he always valued the importance of doing high quality work.

Glenn served in the Army Air Corps as a radio mechanic overseas in China and other nearby territories.

After the war, and three years with the railroad, Glenn began building residential homes primarily in Lakewood and Tacoma. He started commercial construction shortly afterward.

Pride of work

Westmark incorporated in 1971 as Westmark Homes. Glenn later changed the name to Westmark Construction when his primary focus became commercial construction. It was then that Westmark established themselves as a reliable and quality Tacoma-based construction firm.

Glenn’s son, Ward Johnson, began work for Westmark in 1978 and became President in 1991. With Ward assuming leadership of Westmark, Glenn enjoyed showing and working his champion Arabian horses. He served as Chairman for the National Arabian Show Commission for several years until retirement.

As President, Ward committed to developing long-term relationships with heightened standards of excellence and a positive team approach which are evident in the longevity of its employees and relationships with architects, clients, subcontractors, and suppliers.

Ward also modernized the business through technological advances and built a world-class brand through all of Westmark’s marketing collateral. Ward also grew the business as a formidable Tacoma-based construction company “building community” throughout the Puget Sound region.

With Ward’s retirement in 2024 after 46 years with the company, Tom Frank, a veteran of Westmark for over 35 years, transitioned into the role of President and Brian Johnson, a 24 year veteran, as Vice President. Tom and Brian will continue to lead with integrity, professionalism, and experience—core values that have always been part of Westmark’s character.

Over 76 years since Glenn established Westmark, it is superior quality, along with integrity and professional service that still defines us.

The construction industry has changed since the founding of Westmark, but one thing that hasn’t is the ethical way in which we run our business. Glenn saw to it, even making his rounds at the office ensuring everything was on the up and up shortly before he passed away.

As in Westmark’s beginnings, the same holds true today as Glenn put it, “At the end of the day, you can go home and know that you did a good job.” At Westmark, we’ll see to it.
